Viral Balm Foundations- Worth the Hype?

What is it?

If you are active in the beauty space you have probably seen the KVD Beauty Good Apple Foundation that went viral over Tiktok. The KVD foundation sold out on all of its major retailers plus its own website. While this foundation went viral for its ingenuity, many other brands have had similar products for quite some time! The KVD Good Apple Foundation retails for $38, which is on the steeper end in terms of price point.

Beauty influencers have stated that the Milani Conceal + Perfect Smooth Finish Cream-To-Powder Foundation and the CoverGirl Olay Simply Ageless Foundation are said to be dupes for the viral foundation.

So, until I can get my hands on the Good Apple foundation, I will be reviewing the dupes! Not in comparison to the KVD foundation, but how I like balm foundations as a whole.

Review:

I tried the CoverGirl Olay Simply Ageless Foundation which I purchased for $13.49 at my local Walgreens. My first impression of the packaging was that it was confusing and hard to open. The bottom opened up like a lid while the top (where the foundation is) requires you to twist it off. There are directions on the bottom of the packing, however, I did not see them until 5 minutes into trying to open the component.

The first time I applied it, I severely overestimated how much I really needed. I used a flat top foundation brush to swirl around the product and apply it to my face (Morphe M6). I did have to go in with a damp beauty blender to even out the rest of the product. This could be because I typically do not use a brush to apply my foundation. The coverage was medium but buildable for sure. It is not full coverage at all but it gives a skin-like finish. I use setting powder, bronzer, and contour powder when doing my makeup, and even with all of that it still didn't look 'cakey'. I wore the foundation for about 8 hours and in the end, it still looked AMAZING!

The second time I applied it, I used a damp beauty sponge. This is my preferred method for applying foundation. I liked the coverage and finish I got a lot more when I used just a beauty blender to apply the foundation. The coverage was still the same medium but buildable coverage that it was previously. I did the rest of my routine as I always do and went about my day. This day included wearing a mask for about 2 hours. Usually, my foundation begins to break up around my nose and looks extremely cakey after prolonged mask-wearing. This foundation did not break up around my nose at all! I was shocked! My skin had a healthy glow the entire day with no buildup.

Overall Thoughts:

I HIGHLY recommend this foundation. After doing some research Ulta is selling it for a much steeper price ($17.99), so I recommend getting this from a drugstore if you can. The biggest downside is the foundation shade range. It is 2021, how are you going to have 10 shades of tan and one semi-dark shade? Makeup is for everyone, and this includes people of all different skin tones. I am very disappointed in the selection that they provide.
